CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
Cami felt astounded that her plan, with Connorâs help, had worked. Rowan had been lured to his front door by the message. He hadnât seemed to think he was in any danger, and Cami felt sure that heâd intended to shout at the guards for messing up and activating the alarm.
But now he was face-to-face with them.
His face changed instantly. Looking angry, he made as if to slam the door, but like a flash of lightning, Connor got his foot inside.
âRowan Andrews? FBI here. We need to speak to you. Urgently,â he insisted.
Rowan glared at them both. âI have nothing to say to you,â he said firmly.
âYou know why weâre here?â Connor said.
âNo idea. And youâre wasting your time if you think thereâs anything I can tell you,â Rowan said. âIâm not going anywhere with you. Now get your foot out of my door. This is private property.â
âMr. Andrews, you need to come with us to provide information we need.â Connor stood his ground, but Cami saw, with a flash of worry, that there wasnât going to be much he could do if Rowan kept digging in his heels.
âIâm going nowhere,â Rowan insisted.
âArenât you interested in helping?â Cami said. She saw his focus swivel to her angrily. Hoping to push her point, she stepped forward. âI mean, youâre so involved in social causes. The amount of times youâve said that you want to help society is all over the internet. And now, you donât want to come with us?â
His face was darkening with anger, but she wasnât going to stop now.
âDonât you think itâs hypocritical not to help the police? What would the media say if they found out youâd refused?â
âDonât you dare threaten me!â he shouted, and she saw that her baiting had pushed him past the point of fury. And the next moment, he did something Cami really hadnât expected.
His hand lashed out at her and caught her with a glancing blow on the side of the head.
With a cry of surprise, Cami reeled back, stumbling down on one knee.
And like a flash of lightning, Connor lunged forward, grabbed Rowanâs arm, and jerked it down.
âYou just assaulted a law enforcement officer. There werenât grounds to bring you in before this. But now, there are.â
Rowan tried to yank his arm away. And the next moment, Cami gasped as he and Connor were actually grappling with each other. Rowan punched out and Connor ducked. Connor made a grab for his arm and Rowan wrenched away. With an angry yell, he kicked out and Connor staggered back. For a moment, she thought Rowan might actually get the upper hand. She heard fists thudding into flesh, the grunting and cursing as Rowan fought to take control. She stepped back hurriedly, feeling way out of her depth here and wanting to get away from this fight, because she didnât want another backhander like the one heâd given her. The whole side of her head was burning.
Then again, she might have to try
